At the Museum we’re pleased to be hosting one of the opening events to Wild about Reading, a nine-day celebration of the nature, wild spaces and wildlife in our beautiful town. This talk will be led by Dr Tara Pirie, of Reading University and the Berkshire Mammal Group, who has a lot of experience using trail cameras and other clues in her research on big cats.

She will show you how to use camera traps in your own garden, how to make a footprint tunnel to gather evidence of who’s visited, and how to identify the animals’ tracks - and other signs they leave behind.

Reading Arts - Discover a dark chapter of Reading's history in SITELINES performance 'Amelia'

AMELIA

WED 17 - SUNDAY 21 JULY, 6PM; SAT & SUN 12PM & 3PM | ADVISORY AGE 12+
CAVERSHAM LOCK & VIEW ISLAND, MEET AT THAMES LIDO

Content warning: infant mortality, murder
In March 1896, a brown paper package was found floating in the river at Caversham Lock. What was discovered inside brought an end to the chilling career of Victorian baby farmer Amelia Dyer.

Learn more about this sober chapter in Reading's history, as SITELINES presents a promenade performance around the site of the discovery, and how Amelia was able to exploit trainlines, the ineptitude of Victorian policing and the desperation of poverty-stricken parents, to profit from the deaths of up to 400 children.

Created and performed by the same team who brought you Jackson's CornerThe Final WhistleThe Great British Bump Off and Kaspar, plus some of the artists involved in last year's In Ruins at the Abbey Ruins, this is a revealing and gripping look into Reading's history, and a social structure that allowed events like these to occur.

Created & Performed by Cassie Friend & Benedict Sandiford, with Sabina Netherclift
Produced by John Luther (for South Street)

Important: This is an outdoor, promenade performance, so please dress for the weather & for walking. Latecomers - please arrive in plenty of time.
