This tour takes you to the highlights of the Abbey Quarter, including the Hospitium where medieval pilgrims stayed, the impressive conserved Reading Abbey ruins and ends in a unique visit inside the Abbey Gateway, the grand entrance to the Abbot’s Lodgings which became Queen Elizabeth I’s royal residence. Have some myths busted and explore the fascinating history of Reading Abbey Quarter, taking in the ancient and modern stories of this centre, from the lives of Medieval monks to the Georgian schooldays of Jane Austen. READING ABBEY GATEWAY  ROOF TOP TOUR SAT 28 MAY, 2PM-2-45PM Join us for a tour inside the recently restored medieval Abbey Gateway and learn about this listed building’s fascinating history and its role in the Abbey Quarter. Hear about the Abbey monks, visiting royalty, links to novelist Jane Austen and the vital conservation work done to bring it back to life. In groups of ten you can then access the Gateway rooftop - a fantastic chance to see an aerial view of the Forbury Gardens and Abbey Ruins. Please note that the Gateway has no step free access and there are uneven steps and floors. Booking Essential Tickets £15
