Art in the Dark Ages Workshop: Make A Medieval Tile
Friday 31 May, 1.30pm - 4pm & Saturday 1 June, 1.30pm - 4pm | Reading Museum
Looking at tiles from Reading Abbey and the surrounding area, you will learn about the history and meaning of medieval tile making and patterns, then see the process used to make them with a demonstration of traditional tile making methods.
You can choose whether to make a traditional, thick floor tile or a thinner, modern tile more suitable for hanging up or using as a coaster. After decorating the design with slip, your finished tile will be taken away and carefully processed over a few weeks, glazed, fired and returned to the museum for you to collect. There will be time to also draw freehand designs into clay and use small pattern stamps to make an extra, plain glazed tile.
Watch a video demonstration with tiler Karen Slade
Tickets £30, Ages 16+
