From Wilde’s origins in Ireland, to his successful career in London and from his extravagant life as part of Victorian rich and fashionable society to the devastating experience of imprisonment and exile. This tour will give you insight into the tragic and brilliant persona of Oscar Wilde.

READING ABBEY GATEWAY Join us for a tour inside the recently restored medieval Abbey Gateway and learn about this listed building’s fascinating history and its role in the Abbey Quarter. Hear about the Abbey monks, visiting royalty, links to novelist Jane Austen and the vital conservation work done to bring it back to life. In groups of ten you can then access the Gateway rooftop - a fantastic chance to see an aerial view of the Forbury Gardens and Abbey Ruins. Please note that the Gateway has no step free access and there are uneven steps and floors.

This tour takes you to the highlights of the Abbey Quarter, including the Hospitium where medieval pilgrims stayed, the impressive conserved Reading Abbey ruins and the Abbey Gateway, the grand entrance to the Abbot’s Lodgings which became Queen Elizabeth I’s royal residence.

Enjoy a walking tour exploring the heart of medieval Reading led by our trained volunteer guides.
